Dear Rocky Bowlers,

The theme of this entire NCAA Bowl season has been "underdog."  Weak Teams unexpectedly win.

This morning, I woke up to find that I am leading Rocky Bowl for the first time in my life evah ...

I was (3) points ahead of Debbie "Ney-Ney" Tanay (I don't like her nipping at my heals. . . ) in a bunched up leader pack ... 

But when I check the Leaderboard. . . ready to BASK in some form of temporary glory. . . and what do I find. . .  

Duane "the Rock" Redelsheimer - Currently #34 - because he has the most "Points Possible."

Really?  Seriously?!?

I am losing to a guy named DUANE because he couldn't figure out how to front-load his picks?

How am I going to get on the Rachel Maddow show?  I need to Tweet the LeaderBoard to MSNBC. I want to sit across from Charlie Rose and drink strong coffee and discuss nihilistic philosophy. . . But I can't ... because DUANE needs encouragement.  

How am I supposed to pick up Hot Chicks with the leaderboard all messed up?  Gain the Fame and Notoriety due to the 1-day Rockybowl Leader?  I'm like a 24-hour Fruit Fly with no fruit!

I want to BASK.  I can't BASK like this.  This isn't BASKING. . .  I am so embarrassed. . . please don't tell Kurt Schlicker ...

Rocky Bowl Leader Board - after 32 Bowls, Dec 30th, 2016

RockyBowlers are "numbers" people ...

A lot of RockyBowlers are "numbers" people ... They can understand a good graph ... sorting through stacks of stats ... but here's one that doesn't need a post-doctorate degree ...

What started off as a trickle has now become a torrent. . . TOTAL POINTS LOST. . .  Not a Hockey-Stick curve (would imply that losing Rocky Bowl contributes to Global Warming. . . ) . . . this is more of a moving baseline. . . if it were a Stock. . . it would be a BUY signal. . . 

But it's not a stock. . . is the LOSERS in RockyBowl. . . and it's a growth industry.

Should I Short RockyBowl?  Should we Celebrate Mark "Masonater" Mason?  Or is he part of the Problem?

What if the NCAA Football Championship had a bowl game and NONE OF MY TEAMS SHOWED UP?  Is it still a Bowl Game?

The Cougars Coug'ed it. . . QUITE POSSIBLY the GREATEST SLAUGHTER in ROCKYBOWL HISTORY:  2274-24  That's 99% to 1%.. This violates all laws of Truthiness (wiki it if you don't know what that is. . .)

That's 6,210 points wiped off the board in ONE DAY?!?

Rocky Bowl Drama Continues ... The Race for the Bobbi Breeze ... Viewing the Master Sheet ...

Merry Christmas Rocky Bowlers --

The commissioners hope you are snuggling up for a warm winter's night with family and friends. One more game today, the Hawaii Bowl at 5:00pm (Hawaii [35,432] vs Middle Tennessee [40,729] followed by a Christmas day break leading into home stretch for the Bobbi Breeze award.

As is the case every year, a seemingly meaningless game in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces bowl had Rocky Bowlers on the edge of their seats and watching their confidence points as La Tech [35,555] kicked a field goal in the waning seconds to secure a win over Navy [40,694] for a minor RBS upset.

The Navy loss propelled "Rusty" into second place behind the "Masonater" who has a commanding lead in the race for the Bobbi Breeze trophy and $50.

The Bobbi Breeze trophy (named after the favorite drink for Commissioner Doug's late Mom Bobbi) is awarded to the "near" Half-Way leader of the Rocky Bowl.  It is a strategy for some to front load their points to give themselves a chance to win this Prestigious award.  It comes with your name engraved on the trophy for posterity so that you have can display proudly throughout the year.

Also, the Master sheet will be deemed final on Dec 26.  If you have any challenges for  your entry, please send an email to rockybowl@live.com before the start of the first game on Dec. 26.

Also, I apologize for the poor viewing experience of the Master Sheet in the browser.  For the best viewing option for the Master Sheet, you need to download it to your PC and open it with the desktop version of Excel. Unfortunately the Excel Web version does not support my vertical formatting of the Game columns.  So, I understand that it is hard to read.  I have tried several output formats including html and pdf, but they all have their drawbacks.  If anyone has any suggestions, let me know.

Well, continued luck the rest of the way.  Have fun watching your confidence pts add up to Rocky Bowl Championship or fade away into the Toilet Bowl.  Never fear, there is always next year!

Rocky Bowl Party Announced

Welcome back to our past and welcome to the new Rocky Bowlers -- 

Seven games done and thirty four more to go and major upsets are forecast, so hang on.  If you do not see yourself at the top of the list do not worry as old timers will whisper “It is not how many points you have won at this stage but rather, how many points have you lost.”  If you have not visited the Master Sheet review (Leader board tab) you will find it at  rockybowl2017.blogspot.com.  Also do not miss the comments, rants and sometime even insights to past and future games be sure to take a little extra time and we look forward to your replies or comments.

As in all past years the three wise and one gooooood looookin commissioners have decided to continue with the tradition of a Rockybowl party.  Food, fun and companionship is provided and we ask that  you bring your beverage of choice and once again we will be cigar friendly.

We have 4 games on the 28^th and following tradition again the leader who is at the party will be proud to wear the Rocky bowl yellow jersey.  The second game of the day begins at 2:30 with two more starting at 5:30 and 6:00.  We will have a small gathering to watch all or part of the second game and you’re invited to visit then or come when the official party begins at 5:00.   This has always been a very fun evening and we hope that you are able to come by for a few minutes or all evening.

Rocky has, though his hard work through the years, added to the Kübler-Ross model of Loss ... commonly referred to as DABDA ... to incorporate Steve Long into the process ... 

The Long-Kübler-Ross  system ...

Optimism -  "Yeah, this is my year. . . I really have a handle on it. . . I'm gunna finish in the Money"
Confusion - "What, how did #7 lose to an unranked team?"
Denial - "This is NOT happening!  NOT Happening!!!"
Anger - "What the HECK is going on here?!?  Steve?  Did you record my picks right?"
Depression - "Another Frickin' Year man. . . Another Frickin' Year!!!"
Acceptance - "At least I didn't get the Toilet Seat. . . At least I probably won't"
Feigning Praise - "Congrats to Tony's Sister who picked teams based upon their Chakra Color Index"
Fuge - "I never actually tried hard to win Rocky Bowl.  Someday I'll actually put some serious thought and effort into it. . . I've never exposed myself.. my core being. . . to the harm that could come from participation.  Perhaps next year I'll allow myself to be vulnerable ..."

Like Spring follow Winter, these developmental milestones cannot be skipped ... for it they are ignored ... repressed ... sublimed ...  then one is forced to relive them year ... after year ...  after FRICKIN' YEAR!!!

It’s that time again Rocky Bowlers …

The Three Wise Men want to welcome the new, the past, the young and the old Rocky Bowlers back for another great year.

First order of business: If you would like to unsubscribe to the Rocky Bowl emails,  please reply with “Delete”, if you would like to use another email address please reply “new email”,  if you would like to add someone, please reply with “Please Add <insert email address here>”.  For a copy of Rockybowl for Dummies - Lesson one, please refer to Blog site at http://rockybowl2015.blogspot.com.

The format remains the same as last year and is based on the “College Football Playoff” (CFP) system put into place by the Rocket Scientists, Politicians, University Presidents and Network Producers.  This year there is a total of 40 bowl games to evaluate, prognosticate and apply confidence points to your projected bowl game winners.
And, again you can earn CFP bonus points, Read on …

The commissioners have stood by 2 guiding principles when making changes to the format:

• Confidence points should be included to ensure the spirit of the Rocky Bowl is met
• Rocky Bowlers that put higer confidence points on the biggames should be reward. 

With these principles at work, the Semi-Final and CFP Championship game should help determine the Rocky Bowl Champion.  So, you can now earn CFP bonus points based on your CFP semi-final team and confidence points selections from the Peach and Fiesta bowls. Your selected winner with the most confidence points from these games will be carried forward as your CFP National Champion along with its confidence points == CFP Bonus == More Points Possible.  The higher your semi-final confidence points, the higher your Rocky Bowl CFP Bonus.

For you Rocky Bowl veterans, this boils down to one familiar data point and calculation in the Master Sheet, "Points Possible".  You can start the 2016-2017 Rocky Bowl with a “Points Possible" of 820 + 1 = 821, or a “Points Possible” of 820 + 40 = 860.  The bottom line, “How confident are you” and "How badly do you want to win"?

  

The Selection sheet will guide you through this simple process if you read it.  If you don’t read it and you fill it out incorrectly, your entry could be disqualified.  So read and follow the instructions!!! 

If you have been a Rocky Bowler in the past, you understand it is really pretty easy. The CFP Bonus Points have added an interesting twist and controversy to the competition in line with the new College Football Playoff system.  If you’re new to the Rocky Bowl, then you will find out in a year or two that this whole Rocky Bowl thing is entirely luck for some and true skill for others.

You can find the Selection Sheet in the left column of this blog under "Rocky Bowl Selection Sheet ".  Click, download, edit in Excel, read and follow instructions to complete picks for your chance for big fun and winnings.  

We will continue with a $20 entry fee.  Remember, all entries and $$$ must be received prior to the start time of first game. 8:00am PT, Dec 17.

The prize money will be determined by the total entries, but we strive for $1,380.00 in prize money and the balance after minimal expenses for the Rocky Bowl party will go to charity. Rocky Bowl 2016-2017 site under construction ...

Never fear Rocky Bowlers, the Rocky Bowl will continue on this year.  Never mind 2 of the commissioner's being distracted with visions of Crimson Tide busting dancing in their heads.  The working stiff commissioner has a clear head (despite 2 straight losses but a Holiday Bowl birth to ease the pain) and will ensure that this year's bowl season, despite a very flawed CFP process, will again be great due to the Rocky Bowl. 

Please be patient this week as this year's site comes up.  Check back each day for an update and to get the much cherished Rocky Bowl 2016-2017 Selection Sheet.
